There’s a sudden furore exploding across the graphic design world this week as Sqaurespace launches their own logo creation tool.
For $10 users can create a logo created by combining Google Fonts with a library of pre-set icons. The service itself is quite easy to use. Just type in your text, select a few options and within minutes you can see the results on a t-shit, website or business card mock-up.
Here’s the video demo from Squarespace:
The service has naturally sparked heated debate amongst designers. Just check out the comments section on this article. Whilst I agree it is yet another tool that is devaluing our industry, I feel that businesses who utilise such a tool probably wouldn’t engage a professional designer in the first place. As one user on Creativebloq commented: “If you have a $10 business, then a $10 logo will do just fine.”
“If you have a $10 business, then a $10 logo will do just fine.”
I’d go so far as to say after 15 minutes playing with the service the average user will realise the value a professional designer can add. Whilst the above video works marvellously well, it takes into account a user with a keen understanding of typography, composition, colour and the ins-and-outs of what makes a logo work.
“Making a logo” also goes beyond just constructing the icon itself. A graphic designer considers your entire brand personality and visual identity. We consider how your logo will function in the marketplace, what will make you stand out, and how it will work in a variety of usage scenarios. Your logo is just the tip of an entire brand iceberg and a professional graphic designer can add value to any business far beyond just the delivery of your logo.
